    • How is the training delivered?

      The 4-day training programme is delivered via Zoom or Teams.

      It consists of:

      • an initial 2-day Training in the PCI Core Curriculum skills, covering all the skills needed to deliver the coaching intervention.  This 2 days is split across 4 half-days and is followed by:
      • a skills development and supervision programme making up the second 2 days of the 4-day training:
        • 4 (x 2 hr) monthly group Skills Development Sessions that focus on the coaching conversation and how to put the skills into practice to achieve the best outcomes, along with guidance and support around delivering the role;
        • 6 Individual Supervision Sessions, alongside a coach’s own caseload of patients.

      We find this is an effective way for coaches to learn and develop the skills.

      The whole 4-day programme covers a period of 3-4 months.

    • Are any previous qualifications required?

      People don’t need any specific qualifications to do the training. A willingness to learn and reflect is the main requirement and experience with listening skills is an advantage.

      Note:  Coaches are expected to have completed the first 2 days of the training before working with patients in the role of a Health & Wellbeing Coach; the second 2 days is alongside their own patient caseload.

    • What is the training course content?

      The 2-day training covers all the skills needed to work as a Health & Wellbeing Coach.  It includes:

      • An introduction to ‘the Personalised Care Model’ and the roles of Care Coordinators, Health and Wellbeing Coaches and Social Prescribing Link Workers.
      • The role of health coaching skills to support patients to achieve the best outcomes for them, while using health and social care services wisely and effectively;
      • An introduction to the bio-psycho-social model of health – aimed at the whole person;
      • The PCI Core Curriculum health coaching skills including active listening skills, goal-setting, goal follow-up and motivational interviewing techniques to support effective self-management and, where appropriate, behaviour change.
      • An effective evidence-based coaching conversation structure that guides the use of the skills when working with patients;
      • How to recognise patients at different levels of ‘activation’ and how to meet them where they are and support them around whatever’s important to them.

      The second 2-days (for the 4-day training):

      • Supports the ongoing development of the skills introduced in the initial training;
      • Looks more closely at how to use skills to best effect to increase patients’ activation levels and support patients to optimise their health and wellbeing outcomes;
      • Provides the opportunity for Coaches to explore the use of the skills in the context of their own patient caseload;
      • Practical guidance on delivering health coaching as an intervention and collating outcomes.
    • Who is the training aimed at?

      This training is aimed at:

      • Health & Wellbeing Coaches (ARRS role) who are required to complete a PCI-accredited 4-day training in health coaching skills to support self-management and increase patient activation.
      • People in other support roles – health (mental or physical), social care, work, schools, etc – that can offer coaching as a targeted intervention to support people to build their confidence to self-manage.  This means being able to offer individuals a series of sessions (usually 5-6, but tailored to the individual).
